Whole School Art Challenge!

Wallands Freedom Quilt

Here is an art challenge for you, inspired by the story of Clara and how she secretly helped slaves to find the Underground Railroad and the path to freedom. We thought it would be lovely to create a Wallands freedom (from lockdown) quilt.

If you would like to hear the story of Clara please click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLmiRkdIWI0

Just as Clara in the story pieces together scraps of cloth with scraps of information gathered from other slaves to create a map to freedom, we want to create a Wallands freedom quilt to represent all the things our school community has missed whilst being in isolation.

Is it seeing beloved family members that you have missed most? Or playing football with your friends? Enjoying an art lesson with your classmates? Enjoying PE with friends? Visiting the beach in the sunshine? Eating an ice-cream in the park? Can you represent your most wanted/missed aspect of freedom using pictures or patterns to be made into a school quilt design?

If you can find a piece of white A4 paper, carefully fold into three and then into three again and when you unfold it you should have 9 equal sections. It doesn’t need to be exact. You might need to get an adult to help you. Please try to create your design in landscape format (longest sides at the top and bottom).

You need to create a repeating pattern (see examples below) and if you are able to colour in your quilt then try to use the same colours for each section. You can use any medium you wish; paint, pastels, crayons, black pen or collage. It is up to you!

If you can then ask an adult to take a photo of your design and email it into school via your year group email then we can create a montage of your pictures to form our very own freedom quilt. Good luck!

Virtual School Games

Specsavers Virtual Sussex School Games

Hello Wallands!

Today, is the launch of the Specsavers Sussex School Games and it is our chance to work as a community, representing our school, to compete to be Sussex champions!

Every week, a different sport will take place, made up of four personal sporting challenges which can be completed at home.

Scores for each challenge need to be submitted online and will contribute to our schools’ average score. When the competition is completed medals will be awarded in individual sports and an overall award will go to the school who is at the top of the leaderboard.

A new sport, and it’s four challenges, will be published at 9.30am on a Monday. There will be video tutorials to watch along with a PDF detailing each challenge. This week’s sport is hockey. Don’t worry if you do not have the equipment, it suggests alternatives. I am about to start my personal challenge using a broom and a tennis ball! Be creative, it is your determination and resilience that will count!

To take part you just need you go to www.sussexschoolgames.co.uk and follow the instructions. Each week, you will have until midday on Friday to submit your scores and the leaderboards will be published later that day. You simply need to put in your first name, initial of your surname, year group and then select our school from the dropdown list. When you have added that information you can input your individual scores for each of the challenges.

I hope as many of you as possible will get involved, in times like these keeping fit and learning new sporting skills will help us to feel stronger and happier!

Good luck, I will keep you updated with my weekly progress and look forward to seeing Wallands Community Primary School appearing on the leaderboard!

Stay safe and keep smiling!
